I know a Christian business owner who led a successful trucking company for many years. As a personal ministry he would rent a billboard from time to time and have a bible verse printed on it. It was his way of communicating the message of Christ to others. He was also a faithful personal witness for Christ in his business, to his employees and personal contacts. This week's devotional describes the unique way in which all of us represent a "billboard" to others. What kind of message for Christ are those around us seeing in our workplace?

What Is Displayed on Your Billboard?

By Michael Q. Pink

Jesus billboard

Did you know that your work is a billboard for what you believe about God?

Our work is a self-portrait of who we are on the inside and who we are on the inside is a reflection of our relationship with God.

What kind of message is on your billboard? How do you dress for work? Are you modest? Are you slovenly? Just tell yourself that you are going over to the Father's house to work with Jesus in whatever kind of work you normally do, and then dress in a way that leaves the impression with Him that you want to leave.

Do your work as if you are working for Jesus, because you are. (see Colossians 3:23) Let everything you make with your hands be a gift for the Father of lights, because it is. Imagine that every letter you write has a copy sent to Jesus so He can see how you are doing, or every phone conversation is being broadcast in heaven, so the cloud of witnesses in heaven can give you feedback on your communication skills.

Whether you know it or not, your work is a reflection of who you are and what you believe about God. What you believe about God is based on how well you know Him. How well you know Him is the billboard that everyone else reads.

A WORK PRAYER

Lord Jesus Christ, today I invite You to be fully in my work. I do it for You and all the people around me it affects.   Amen.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. Why do you think we sometimes don't want to think about "bringing Jesus to work" with us?
  2. What kind of message do you think is currently on your billboard? If coworkers were asked to write the message for your billboard, how would it compare?
  3. What are some concrete ways you can improve your message?
