What is your worklife all about? Is it just a paycheck? Certainly the paycheck is important, but God would have us see much more in our day-to-day work than that. Read on...

Constructive Christian Work
by Dr. RIchard Bouch
Daily life and work offer opportunities to build effectively for God.
Many times He just wants us to get on with the task at hand. Several Old Testament stories about building construction illustrate this.
The Tabernacle of Sinai followed a design God stipulated. But without the dedicated work of its builders, there would have been no Tabernacle.
When King Solomon commanded the magnificent temple to be built in Jerusalem, he merely gave the orders. As king, he didn't do any construction himself. The chief craftsman came from outside Solomon's territory, while a small army of workers worked for years cutting and shaping stone, wood and metal. The Bible gives credit to those workers and craftsmen, for the task was impossible without them.
Later, Jews returning from exile in Babylon found the protective wall around Jerusalem in ruins. They all joined together to rebuild it. In the book of Nehemiah we see that priests, goldsmiths, merchants, perfumers, and many others whose skills are unnamed worked alongside each other building and guarding the wall. Thanks to them, Israel's part in God's plan went ahead.
What are we building? How are you playing your part? You, I and everyone else reading this will tackle a variety of tasks today. Encourage a Christian coworker if you have one; encourage and help your non-Christian coworkers; do your tasks well and honestly. Our daily tasks can be bricks that God takes and uses to build his Kingdom.
A WORK PRAYER
Lord, show me how daily tasks, at my workplace and away from it, can be part of Your daily care for the world. Show me why they are important to You. Help me to build for You. I need Your grace for this. Thank You for it. Amen.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
  1. Do you look at your work as a construction job for Jesus? In light of that, how would you rate your "construction skills"?
  2. In what ways do you think your work is part of God's care for the world? (Or just your small part of it - remember, God uses simple, small, straightforward things.)
