Walking in Justice, Mercy and Humility @ Work

By Drew Crandall

Micah 6:8 (KJV): "He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?"

As we actively seek to be Godly influences in our workplaces, we need to diligently seek to do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with our Lord. By doing so, we create a strong spiritual foundation upon which we can be discipled and disciple others.

This Scripture was my father-in-law's favorite passage and the verse quoted at his funeral. For decades, I watched Court consistently talk and walk Micah 6:8 in all aspects of his life. His well-deserved reputation as a fair, merciful and humble follower of Christ was remarkable.

I also watched the Favor of the Lord upon him, big-time. Here is an example. Decades ago, Court was working at a famous historic inn and was a very reliable, hard-working, upright employee. One day, the owner of the inn called Court into his office. (What is your knee-jerk reaction when called into your boss' office? Usually, it's trepidation: you anticipate getting hit with bad news of one kind or another.)

Court entered the owner's office, not knowing what was going on. The owner shut the door and said that he knew that Court had a growing family (eventually, seven children), wanted to build a bigger house, had the construction experience and carpentry skills to build a bigger house, but didn't have the money to buy property on which he could build a bigger house. So, that day, the owner of the inn gave Court several acres of prime riverfront property. Isn't that amazing? Court went home to be with the Lord years ago, but the homestead that he built remains in the family to this day, a safe haven for generations of Court's descendants. Who would have thunk it?

APPLICATION: In your everyday work life:

* Do you have a heart to do what's right in how you treat all people, from the owner and supervisors to peers, customers, suppliers and the general public?

* When faced with a situation in the workplace where you could choose to play hardball or choose to be merciful, does your heart gravitate toward mercy?

* Do you understand that arrogance and self-righteousness are contrary to having a vibrant Christian witness at work? That humility is the best and only effective way to live and influence our culture for Christ?

May these three attributes abound in and through me and you always. Easier said than done, I realize that. I fall short many times. But by God's Grace, we can do it.

Author's Note: If you want to grow in doing justice, loving mercy and walking humbly, consider signing up for the 2017 GO Conference in Worcester, Massachusetts on February 17-18.  Click here for all of the details. I'm organizing two panel workshops on Making Disciples in the Workplace and Doing Justice in the Workplace. Plus, Northeast Christians At Work will have a display with new resources to help you to be a fruitful Christ follower at work.
